New Resident Checklist
Interested in moving to Frederick County? We love to hear it! Whether you're moving from another county in Maryland to us or coming in from another state, moving can be a stressful and hectic experience. To make things a little easier, we've put together a checklist of things to consider as you begin the process of moving to our county. Please note that not all of these items may be applicable to you depending on your circumstances. These items are intended to help you get started!
Setup Utilities
- Water & Sewer: Contact Frederick County Division of Water & Sewer OR City of Frederick Utilities (301-600-1440) if moving to the city of Frederick.
- Electric & Gas: Maryland is a deregulated energy state, meaning you get to choose your energy provider. Common energy suppliers in our area include but are not limited to Potomac Edison, Washington Gas Company, Just Energy, SFE Energy, XOOM Energy, and the Thurmont Municipal Light Company (if you are a Thurmont resident). Try to contact your chosen energy provider within at least one week of your move-in date to ensure your energy is properly set-up before your arrival.
- Trash & Recycling: Visit our Recycling Information page for instructions on how to setup recycling services and your recycling schedule. For trash pickup, check with your local municipality or HOA to setup services.
- Internet & Cable: Common providers in our area include, but are not limited to, Verizon, AT&T, Xfinity, T-Mobile, GloFiber, and Earthlink. If you are in a rural area with limited access to broadband, considering visiting our Rural Broadband Study information page to find out more information on your options.
Update or Get Your Maryland License
- Visit the MVA to setup an appointment to update your license if you are already a Maryland resident or to obtain a new license if you are not a Maryland resident. You are required to change your license address within 30 days of your move and are required to obtain a state license within 60 days of your move if you were an out-of-state resident.
Register Your Vehicle
- If you are a new resident to Maryland, you will need to register your vehicle title and deed within 60 days of your move. Details on how to register a vehicle for new Maryland residents can be found on the New to Maryland Titling and Registering page.
- Your voice matters! Make sure to register with the Maryland State Board of Elections if you were not previously a Maryland resident or update your address information if you were previously a Maryland resident. To register to vote, visit the Voter Registration page. To update your voting information, visit the Update Voter Registration page. For the latest updates on county elections, visit our Board of Elections homepage.
Update Your Postal Address
- Update your address information with the United States Postal Service to make sure you don't miss out on any mail in the move. You can also update your voter registration from here!
Sign Up for FCG FixIt
- Sign-up for our FCG FixIt app to quickly report issues in the community like downed powerlines, animal carcasses, potholes, dangerous tree limbs, and more all from the convenience of your phone or desktop computer.
