Running for Office

Are you planning to run for an elected office in Frederick County in 2020?
The candidate filing period is Tuesday, February 5, 2019 through Wednesday, February 5, 2020!

Make sure you file by Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 9pm, or you will not qualify to be on the 2020 Primary ballot. If you're interested in filing, here's what you need to know:

State and Federal candidates must file at the Maryland State Board of Elections, 151 West Street, in Annapolis. Find out how to file for State and Federal offices, here.

Candidates for Frederick County elected offices will file at our office, located at 340A Montevue Lane, in Frederick.

  1. You'll need to pick up, and complete a candidate packet for the office you're seeking. You can save time by picking up the candidate packet at our office, and filling it out in advance. Normal office hours are Monday thru Friday 7:30am-4pm.

Remember the filing deadline is Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 9pm. We'll be open late that day, but you have to be at our office by 9pm. We expect it will be busy throughout the day, so you may want to file before the deadline.
  2. You'll need to pay a candidate filing fee, which varies depending on the office you're seeking. We accept cash or check for your filing fee. Checks may be made out to the Frederick County Board of Elections.  Fees range from $10 to $25 depending on the office you're seeking.

  3. You'll need to bring proof that you've filed the appropriate ethics disclosure. If you're filing as a candidate for Board of Education, you'll need to complete the appropriate ethics disclosure form. You can find instructions here.

  4. Make sure you bring proof you have set up a candidate committee in Maryland's Campaign Finance System.

  5. If you're planning to use a nickname, or alternative name on the ballot, you'll need to complete this form

While you're welcome to complete these forms when you come in to file, you'll save yourself some time if you complete as much as possible in advance.

If you have any questions, please see below, or call our office at 301-600-VOTE (8683) and we'll be happy to help.
