FREDERICK, Md. – Members of the public are invited to attend a Historic Preservation Tax Credit Workshop on Monday, January 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the C. Burr Artz Public Library’s Community Room located at 110 East Patrick Street in Frederick.

Attendees will learn about programs available to support the rehabilitation of historic properties. The workshop will be hosted by the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), the City of Frederick Planning Department, and the Frederick County Division of Planning and Permitting.

Historic preservation programs are available at the state, county, and local levels to support the rehabilitation of historic properties. These initiatives offer resources such as grants, tax incentives, and technical assistance to help preserve and restore historic structures while maintaining their cultural and architectural significance. Each program has its own benefits, restrictions, and requirements, which will be discussed during the workshop.

The Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit Program encourages the preservation and rehabilitation of historic properties throughout Maryland by providing a 20 percent tax credit for qualified rehabilitation projects. These tax credits are available to both owner-occupied residences and commercial properties. To be eligible, all projects must be reviewed and approved by MHT prior to the start of work. While this state tax credit may be used in conjunction with local historic tax credits, MHT review is independent of local review and may not be waived or substituted for local approval.

Frederick County recently enacted a new Historic Preservation tax credit for properties that have been locally designated by the County, the City of Frederick, or the Town of New Market. This program allows for a 25 percent credit on eligible exterior expenditures. Applications for this program are due April 1, 2026.

The City of Frederick’s Historic Preservation Property Tax Credit is available for properties in the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone, either individually or as a district. This program allows for a 25 percent credit on eligible exterior expenditures. Applications for this program are due April 1, 2026.

Individuals requiring special accommodations for the workshop should call 301-600-1147 no later than Wednesday, January 7.

Additional questions or concerns may be directed to Amanda Whitmore, Livable Frederick Historic Preservation Planner, at AWhitmore@FrederickCountyMD.gov or 301-600-1147.
