“When I first heard the news of this unbelievable shooting at an elementary school, I was gripped with fear and anguish in my heart as I thought of my own sons and the incredible pain these parents, friends and family members must be feeling right now. All of us watching the reports are in shock that what looks to be an act of hometown terrorism should target the most innocent and indefensible of victims – children and their caregivers.
“We will be reflecting on the enormity of this tragedy for a long time to come and also considering the ramifications for our own citizens. We cannot imagine this level of violence in our country, but it has happened in schools, movie theaters and small hometowns. I am proud that in Frederick County we have one of the finest school systems in the country and the best law officers serving us. However, these officials need the eyes and ears of our citizens to keep them informed of anything that may cause concern or raise suspicions. We cannot live in fear, but such close cooperation will go a long way in reducing the threat of such a tragedy here.
“On behalf of the citizens of Frederick County, Maryland, we send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the mothers and fathers, family members, friends and school colleagues who are affected either directly or indirectly by this terrible shooting. From our hometown of Frederick County to the hometown of Newtown, Connecticut, your grief is our grief and we extend our sympathies to you in this time of mourning.”
In the wake of such a tragedy, the County Commissioners remind citizens to always remain on the alert in their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement officials.
