[ARCHIVED] Loys Station Historic Covered Bridge Damaged

Detour in Place to Allow for Repairs

FREDERICK, Md. – Old Frederick Road between New Cut Road to Md. Route 77 (Rocky Ridge Road) is closed so Division of Public Works crews can make repairs to the historic Loys Station Covered Bridge. The bridge was damaged and the over-height warning portal on the south entrance was destroyed after an over-sized vehicle tried to drive through it overnight or early this morning. A signed detour is in place.

The driver and vehicle both fled the scene. Deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

The emergency road closure will make travel through the Rocky Ridge area difficult. Other roads are also closed. Old Mill Road is undergoing repairs from truck damage that occurred last December, and the Maryland State Highway Administration closed Route 77 on Friday to replace a bridge.

Repairs are expected to take up to three weeks. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office’s Tips Line at 301-600-4131.
