FREDERICK, Md. – Today, the Frederick County Division of Animal Control held a groundbreaking ceremony to begin the total renovation and expansion of the facility located at 1832 Rosemont Avenue in Frederick. The expansion will increase shelter and office space by over 60 percent.

The renovation and expansion will enhance living conditions for shelter residents and improve services for members of the community. When complete, the shelter will be approximately 20,620 square feet, compared to the current 12,660-square-foot facility. The project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2026. During the renovation, animals will still be available for adoption and essential services will continue as normal. Due to limited space, shelter tours and other educational programs at the shelter will be discontinued until construction is completed.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by County Executive Jessica Fitzwater, members of the County Council, Senator Karen Lewis Young, local elected officials, the Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter, and animal advocates in the community.
