On Friday, April 13, 2018, the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services welcomed 22 new members to the Department. The ceremony for Recruit Class 23 was held at the Tuscarora High School Auditorium.
The 28-week academy began on October 2, 2017. The firefighters participated in over 800 hours of coursework which included: Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Vehicle Operator, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Rescue Technician - Site Operations and Vehicle Machinery Rescue, Firefighter Safety and Survival, Truck Company Operations and Child Passenger Safety Technician. Recruit Class 23’s class valedictorian is Taylor Prieur. Taylor averaged a 91.29% on his academics. The class average was 87.81%. RC23 also enjoyed participating in physical fitness activities. The class collectively lost 95 pounds throughout the academy. Class physical training scores increased an average of 29% per recruit from their initial fitness test scoring.
The class motto was “Ubi Concordia Ibi” (where there is unity, there is victory) which represents 22 well-trained, disciplined firefighters of high moral character that are knowledgeable and capable of making sound, educated decisions in their professional and personal lives and recognize the importance of working in unison in order to achieve an objective. RC23 is comprised of individuals with varying previous work experience from a banker to a deputy coroner. Seven members are veterans, representing the Army, Marine Corps and the Air Force branches.
The class was led by Platoon Leader Christopher Franco, Squad Leaders Sadie Bertier, Trevor Meador and Matthew Lewis. Recruit Class 23 members are: Tyler Arrowood, Sadie Bertier, Joshua Shank, Michael Caldarola, Racheal Calderon-Murphy, Scott Deibler, Scott Effinger, Roger Fessenden, Christopher Franco, Brandon Hamlin, Matthew Lewis, Louis McClain Jr., Trevor Meador, Jeremy Miles, Kyle Moore, Zachary Nixon, Chad Owens, Chester Podd III, Jason Porterfield, Taylor Prieur, Austin Tipler and Nathan Warfel.
The Recruit Class Commander was Lieutenant Sean Donovan. The training academy is managed by Battalion Chief Daniel Healy, Captains Lenne Stolberg and Kathleen Harne. Thanks to the many instructors who helped make Recruit Class 23 a success!
