Recycling Poster Design Contest


Create artwork that provides education on or promotion of the topic of recycling.  Designs should increase awareness of, participation in or understanding of recycling.  Entries should reflect one or more of the following themes:
       •  communicate what is and is not recyclable in Frederick County
       •  demonstrate the ease of recycling
       •  draw attention to the value of recycling
       •  show that recycling is an important part of the community.

  • Grand Prize: $150 award.
  • Community Choice (to be selected by online voting): $100 award.
  • Grade K-2 , 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12: One $75 award for each grade-level category.
  • Artwork selected by County staff will be reproduced as printed posters for community distribution. Select entries will also be placed on display in Frederick County public libraries.


Frederick County residents and students ages 5 and up.


Designs should should fit an 8.5" x 11" or 11" x 17" space and may be in any media suitable for print reproduction as a poster.  Artwork must be original, solely the creation of the entrant, and should not incorporate visual elements of other artist's work.
If design is submitted digitally, it must be in one of the following formats: jpeg, tiff, png, eps or psd. (No pdfs.)


Submissions must be received by Monday, March 27, 2017.


  • ONLINE: Participants may use the online entry form and upload their submission; digital artwork may be submitted in the following file formats only: jpeg, tiff, png, psd or eps.
  • MAIL: Alternatively, hard copies of artwork may be delivered/mailed along with an official entry form to: DSWM Poster Contest, 9031 Reichs Ford Road, Frederick, MD 21704.  Hard copy submissions MUST be accompanied by a printed, completed entry form that is taped to the back of the artwork. Printed artwork becomes the property of DSWM and will not be returned.

Entrants give the Frederick County Department of Solid Waste Management permission to alter, edit, publish, distribute and otherwise use this submission in its print and electronic publications, presentations, and promotions.

Submissions will be judged by Frederick County Government staff who will choose the Grand Prize winner as well as a selection of entries to be placed on Facebook at the end of March (at for online voting to select a Community Choice winner.  All winners will be announced the week of Earth Day (April 22).
