Comprehensive Planning Responsibility

Duties & Responsibilities
The Comprehensive Planning Section is responsible for undertaking long-range planning activities for the County. These activities include the preparation and update of the Countywide Comprehensive Plan, which is a general policy document guiding growth and development and the region plans, which provide detailed land use plans and zoning for each of the 8 planning regions covering the county. This section is also responsible for various functional planning areas including water and sewer planning, environmental planning, historic preservation, and transportation planning. The planning staff also coordinates with the county’s 12 municipalities, which have their own planning and zoning authority. For some of the municipalities who do not have their own staff, the county provides staff assistance for their various planning activities.

The Comprehensive Planning Section also acts in a coordinating role with various state and regional agencies including the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Department of Transportation, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
