The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed an adjustment to the recommendation for optimal fluoride levels in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. After consultation with the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) Water Supply Program, all fluoridated water systems will be following these recommendations and lowering the target dosage rate of fluoride from 1.0 mg/l to 0.7 mg/l.
For more information about community water fluoridation, information on tooth decay prevention and dental fluorosis, visit the Center for Disease Control website. Information about the national drinking water regulations for fluoride can be found at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website.
