GIS Section - DPW

Introduction

The Division of Public Works – GIS Section provides Geographic Information System (GIS) support in the form of direct project and information management for specific departmental needs, the fulfillment of GIS requests for mapping products and spatial analysis and is an active component of the Frederick County GIS Program.

What are Geographic Information Systems?

Geographic Information Systems are information technology tools that combine the power of location with a geographic database allowing us to model features on the earth’s surface and provide a greater understanding of the world we live in.  Frederick County GIS has been developing since 1994 and to date, over 50 GIS data layers have been created and are maintained by county GIS staff.

GIS Technology Supports Many Programs Within The Division of Public Works

Snow Route Mapping

Each winter over 1200 miles of county roads are cleared of snow and ice.  Utilizing GIS data and mapping techniques, the GIS Section provides the Office of Highway Operations snow removal truck drivers with an accurate map of their route.  This map contains important features such as fire stations, schools and restricted weight bridges.  GIS technology allows for the timely mapping of route changes for each winter season’s operations.

Survey Control

Frederick County Government maintains 247 survey control monuments for use by the survey and development community.  The location and details of each monument are stored in a spatial database enabling the public to access monumentation information (location and survey data), determine the nearest survey control to a developer’s site and view mapping of the entire Frederick County Survey Control Network and related links.

National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

Frederick County uses GIS to prevent stormwater pollution and comply with environmental regulations. In developed areas, underground storm drainage systems and collection ponds help to safely remove water from the surface and prevent flooding.  The GIS Section tracks these systems and ponds for mandated federal and state stormwater discharge permitting and in support of the Division of Public Works, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System activities.  For more information, follow this link Watershed Management Section
