NEW for the 2012-13 School Year: TOP RECYLERS CONTEST!

Magic of RecyclingAll FCPS facilities have single-stream recycling available- the same easy, no-sorting recycling program used for local residential recycling. That means that in every classroom, cafeteria, office and teachers’ lounge, the same materials can be easily recycled. So, how does your school's recycling effort measure up?

Each time the recyclables are collected from a FCPS facility, the weight of the materials is recorded. During the 2012-13 school year, for the first time, this data will be used to compare how each school ranks for recycling! (Measurements will be assessed on a per-capita recycling basis, total pounds recycled divided by the number of staff and students in each facility.)

At the end of the school year, the top-ranking elementary schools will each receive a special prize: a school-wide assembly-- a magic show presented by professional performers that not only entertains but also educates about reducing, reusing and recycling!

Want your school to be recognized as local “green” leader?  Then make sure you and your students follow our motto and “Put it in the Blue!” This is a great opportunity to teach students about recycling (need help getting the message out? Reserve one of the new “R Info 4 Kids!” kits described below) and make sure they are learning good habits to last a lifetime.

If you would like to see your school’s recycling progress during the school year- and how it measures up to your FCPS “competitors”, you can have the monthly recycling measurements emailed to you. Contact Annmarie Creamer at or call 301-600-7405 for more information.
