Another major area within the Special Operations Unit is Central Booking, which officially opened for operation in October 1996. Central Booking is an integral part of law enforcement processing in Frederick County. It provides intake processing for all of the law enforcement agencies in the County. It has been demonstrated that the central booking of prisoners allows police officers to return to the street 60% faster than previously experienced following an arrest. The processing of an arrestee, with the exception of receiving the positive identification, is usually completed before the police officer has finished the law enforcement component of the process. This translates directly to a speedier return of police to police duties.
