Training Services
General Information
The Training Section is responsible for the In - Service Training and
Career Development for the Corrections Bureau's over 172 employees.
Other tasks include managing the Frederick County Criminal Justice
Training Academy which provides Entry Level Training to new correctional
officers and support staff as mandated by the State of Maryland as well
as providing these educational services to surrounding counties.
The Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission requires
within one year of appointment to the position of Correctional Officer
or Support Staff, attendance in a Maryland Correctional Training
Commission approved academy. Correctional Officers need a minimum of
200.0 hours and Support Staff need a minimum of 120.0 hours.
All personnel of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office -
Corrections Bureau currently certified to carry an on - duty weapon(s)
received a two hour block of instruction on Firearms - Handguns and a
one hour block of instruction on Firearms - Shotgun. Included during
this block of training was a lecture on Use of Force, sight alignment,
and observation training
All personnel of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office -
Corrections Bureau currently certified to carry an on - duty weapon,
qualified with their weapons at the range in the following areas:
- (1) Night Fire Qualification
- (2) Day Fire Qualifications
- (1) Shotgun Qualification
- (1) Night Fire Stress Course
- (1) Day Fire Stress Course

All personnel of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office - Corrections
Bureau received in - service training on the topics of Bloodborne
Pathogens / AIDS, Airborne Pathogens, Suicide Prevention, Prison Rape
Elimination Act, Emergency Procedures, and Medical Intake Procedures.
All personnel hired in the capacity of Correctional Officer and Support
Staff received an orientation program ranging from 40.0 hours classroom
with an additional 40.0 to 120.0 hours of on the job training. All
civilian employees have received an orientation program of 4.0 hours
classroom and an additional 36.0 hours of on the job training. This
training has approved lesson plans by the Frederick County Sheriff's
Office and Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
